I get why you’re upset that you’ve found out your tattoo has a meaning you didn’t know about. my tattoo is for myself, and yours should be, too, for whatever reasons you see fit, even if those reasons are entirely aesthetic. one of the generally recognized stories of medusa (though there are many versions), which does involve s/a (poseidon), has created these interpretations, but her s/a is not the "meaning" behind the tattoo even for survivors.Īs a survivor myself, i do not enjoy medusa imagery to "advertise" (a kind of icky wording i saw in another comment in this thread) anything. but the way i see it, s/a survivors who choose to get medusa tattoos aren't saying "this represents the fact that i was assaulted/abused." sexual assault/abuse survivors "adopted" the symbol because it represents strength, power, and warding off evil. I know i'm mainly repeating what's alrdy been said, but i agree with a lot of commenters when it comes to medusa having many meanings - but even if none resonate with you, she's also just a badass motif imo. After finding out and seeing so many people saying you shouldn’t get a Medusa tattoo if you’re not a survivor, it made me extremely uncomfortable and made me dislike my own tattoo for a little while because every time I looked at it, it was reminding me of very traumatic experiences, and why would I want something permanently on my body reminding me of something horrible that happened to me? I’ve since been able to distance it in my mind, but just wanted to put out there that not all survivors want to use the Medusa image in that way, and there are plenty of other mythological connections to draw on in terms of symbolism that means something to you. I have a Medusa tattoo and I am a survivor but I never made the connection between the two until after I got the tattoo, I just got it because I’ve studied Greek literature and it’s a big interest of mine. People who gatekeep the meaning of tattoos (other than obvious traditional cultural tattooing) are annoying.
